TALE OF THE TIBETAN NOMAD

Producer

Tribeca Immersive 2020 World Premiere

A newlywed nomad and his wife bask in the flush of new love. He falls asleep then awakens to discover his wife has disappeared. Embarking on a quest to find her, he’s led into a life he never dreamed of—one that soon slips beyond his control.

The Tale of the Tibetan Nomad is a VR film partnership with UC Berkeley Arts + Design and Director Carol Liu’s U-Ma Studios.

In cooperation with Stan Lai 赖声川. We adapted his award-winning play, A Dream Like A Dream《如梦之梦》into a VR film.

As Producer, I worked with our Director and lead a 10+ person crew on:

  • Production logistics — bringing the film to life

  • Production design — crafting the world

  • Pitch decks + branding kits for distribution — creating a visual language

Bringing the film to life

As an immersive film producer, I love how creating for VR affords designing an entire world. Here, we’re figuring out how to create the authentic world of the high plateaus in Tibet. The story, director, crew, talent, and production design help achieve this.

Crafting the world

Led by award winning costume & production designer, Sandra Woodall, our art department focused on the attention to Tibetan artistic detail. As set dresser,

  • Source genuine props and costumes from the local Tibetan community — per lead actor, Tsering Dorjee

  • Research architectural environment of the yurt + location scouting

  • Design storyboard diagrams to plan how our characters and interact with props

Creating a visual language

For distribution, marketing, and press, I established a visual language that keeps the film alive with the press kit + poster.

Press

This film held its world premiere at
Tribeca Film Festival Immersive in April 2020.

    ”A Coup”

  • VRPinea
“A cross-disciplinary experiment, a modernization of a traditional theater piece which expresses artistry in an altogether different kind of way”

  • CNet
“A gentle folk tale of a Tibetan nomad's life, told by a narrator. The feeling of passive observation feels like watching a diorama or a cultural play in VR”

  • Upload VR
“Offers an engaging look into Tibetan folklore”
